The Municipality of Utajärvi has welcomed the start of construction activity on a planned data centre campus in the northern Finnish municipality, after contractor NYAB Finland Oy signed an agreement covering the first stage of early works at the site.
The contract was announced on 9 October 2026, with work commencing immediately.
Municipality highlights the importance of the project
The start of the works has been framed by local government as a tangible step forward for the municipality.
"This large-scale data centre project is of great importance to the Municipality of Utajärvi. The commencement of the works marks another concrete step in the development of the data centre campus. The Municipality of Utajärvi will continue its close cooperation with the parties involved in the project and support the continued development," says Anne Sormunen, Mayor of Utajärvi.
The municipality's statement reflects the close working relationship it has established with the developers as the campus moves from planning into physical delivery on the ground.
Scope of the signed contract
The agreement signed by NYAB Finland Oy covers site preparation and the infrastructure works required for the development of the campus. It also includes options to increase the scope of the early works, though the contract value will not be disclosed.
The campus is being developed through Data Tank Nordic Oy, the project company of AMP Tank AG. The early works contract represents the initial step of the planned campus development.
Full-scale vision for the site
If implemented in full, the campus would comprise four data halls with a combined capacity of 200 MW, along with associated infrastructure.
Beyond the current early works stage, NYAB's involvement in the broader implementation of the project is currently under negotiation and would be subject to separate agreements.
Contractor points to established role
NYAB has emphasised the continuity of its engagement, having joined the project before the current stage.
"The data centre project in Utajärvi is well suited to NYAB's experience and expertise in infrastructure, energy, and industrial construction. We have been involved in the project from an early stage and look forward to continuing our cooperation on the project," says Petri Kotkansalo, CEO of NYAB Finland.
Kotkansalo serves as the contact for further information on the project.
