Applied Digital Accesses Up to 1 GW in Finland for First Non-U.S. AI Factory Campus

Applied Digital, the Dallas-headquartered developer and operator of large-scale data centers built for high-performance computing and artificial intelligence workloads, announced on October 6, 2026 that it has entered into an agreement granting it access to as much as 1 gigawatt of potential power capacity in Finland.

A Texas-Based Data Center Operator Extends Its Reach to the Nordics

The arrangement is the company's first development opportunity beyond the borders of the United States. Under the deal, the company intends to construct a large-scale AI Factory campus that can scale up to 1 GW. Power is anticipated to become available initially starting in 2028. Site marketing has already begun, and Applied Digital says it is in talks with leading global hyperscale customers about the location.

Leadership Frames the Move as Deliberate, Not Strategic Shift

Wes Cummins, the company's Chairman and CEO, said the agreement reflects the same site-selection discipline that has driven the business since its founding. "Applied Digital has built its platform around identifying the right power in the right markets and turning that power into operational AI capacity," Cummins said.

He pointed to the parallels between North Dakota, where the company has established operations, and the Nordic region: "Finland stood out because many of the characteristics that have supported our success in North Dakota are also present in the Nordics, a favorable climate, an attractive energy ecosystem, strong connectivity and the ability to develop at meaningful scale." Cummins was careful to characterize the Finnish agreement as an addition rather than a pivot. "This is a deliberate first step, not a change in our strategy," he said. "Our focus remains firmly on executing the projects in front of us in the United States."

He added that selectively securing compelling sites is important as the company works to build itself into a category leader in AI infrastructure, because such sites can extend its growth runway over the long term.

U.S. Portfolio Remains the Center of Gravity

Despite the international expansion, the company stressed that its near-term development strategy and execution priorities remain anchored in its growing domestic portfolio. Finland is described as a measured first step toward selectively extending the platform into attractive international markets over time.

The agreement's structure, according to the announcement, is designed to offer meaningful long-term growth potential while capping the company's initial exposure and preserving disciplined capital deployment.

Cummins reinforced that point in a further statement: "Our ability to scale is not about planting flags in as many markets as possible. It is about identifying exceptional sites and applying the same disciplined model repeatedly. We have demonstrated that model across our U.S. portfolio. Finland gives us the opportunity to begin proving that platform can travel."

Finland's Appeal for Hyperscale and AI Development

According to the company, Finland has become an increasingly attractive market for hyperscale and AI development, supported by its cooler climate, established energy and digital networks, and growing investment from global technology leaders.

Applied Digital sees these attributes as closely aligned with the development principles behind its U.S. portfolio, securing scalable power and land in markets where AI capacity can be built efficiently, responsibly, and repeatedly.

The company's rationale leaned heavily on the North Dakota comparison. In both regions, Cummins cited a favorable climate, an attractive energy ecosystem, strong connectivity and the ability to develop at meaningful scale as shared characteristics.

The AI Factory Model Goes International

The planned Finnish campus would be the first potential application of Applied Digital's AI Factory campus development model outside the United States. The company said it intends to advance the project in a disciplined manner, with future investment and development decisions tied to customer demand, commercial milestones and satisfaction of necessary regulatory and development requirements.
