A month after filing for a two-building project in Union City, Microsoft submitted a Development of Regional Impact application with Georgia authorities on October 20 for a data center campus in Floyd County.
The filing lays out plans for three buildings on 349 acres at 0 Huffaker Road in Rome, a site the company acquired in 2023 under the name "Project Firecracker."
Three buildings totaling 1.66 million sq ft
The development, known as ATL80, will comprise three data center buildings with a combined floor space of up to 1,659,000 sq ft (154,126 sqm). Microsoft values the completed project at USD 360 million and expects it to generate USD 35 million in annual local tax revenue.
The company estimates completion by 2032, with 150 employees once the campus is operational.
Utility demands outlined in the application
The filing states the campus will have a total power capacity of 422 MW, supplied by Georgia Power. Water demand is estimated at a maximum of 13,500 gallons (51,103 liters) per day.
Rome sits northwest of Atlanta, which serves as Georgia's primary data center hub.
Second recent Georgia application
The Floyd County submission arrives roughly one month after Microsoft filed a Developments of Regional Impact application with the Georgia Department of Community Affairs for ATL50, a separate campus in Union City.
That project consists of two buildings totaling 910,000 sq ft (84,540 sqm) on an 88-acre parcel located west of Stonewall Tell Road and north of Koweta Road, with a planned launch in 2032.
Expanding presence across the state
Microsoft's Georgia portfolio spans both operating and developing data center sites in Fairburn, Douglasville, Palmetto, Rome, East Point, Tyrone, and other locations. Atlanta is home to one of the company's major "Fairwater" data centers, which launched in November 2025. The company announced its intention to build a cloud region in Georgia in 2021.
In December of last year, it disclosed that the Fairwater site would be folded into that region, along with developments in Fulton County outside Atlanta, where Microsoft broke ground in July 2024. The cloud region plans also encompass two additional projects on Atlanta's outskirts: one in East Point, Fulton County, and another in Douglasville, Douglas County.
