AWS Outlines First Washington Data Center Campus in Walla Walla County, US

Amazon Web Services has disclosed plans for what will be its first data center in Washington state, confirming it is the developer of a proposed campus at the Port of Walla Walla. The project, known as the Amazon Attalia Data Center Campus, is designed around a 300 MW power capacity and would add the cloud provider's name to a state market currently concentrated around Seattle and Quincy.

What is being proposed

Documents released by Walla Walla County describe a campus of three data center buildings, each measuring 220,000 sq ft (20,440 sqm), on a 134-acre site bounded by Sundance Road, Dodd Road, and Worden Road.

Beyond the server halls themselves, AWS plans a security building, an industrial water facility, and a pad reserved for a substation that will be built out by a future utility provider. The land falls within the 554 acres in the Wallula Gap Business Park that were sold to Amazon Data Services in February 2026.

Where the project stands in review

The proposal is not yet approved. Walla Walla County and Facet, a third-party planning consultant, are working through a State Environmental Policy Act review. When that is finished, AWS will have the opportunity to respond to issues raised, after which a second public comment period will open. The county will make its formal decision on the development only at that point, and no timeline has been set.

A full Environmental Impact Statement has been called for ahead of any final approval. Public input so far has leaned heavily against the project. Of the 706 submissions received during a comment period that closed in mid-October, only 23 supported the data center. Supporters who did write in urged safeguards, including that "the ecology of the Walla Walla Valley must be protected."

A much smaller footprint than first imagined

The current proposal represents a substantial reduction from earlier ambitions for the site. In October 2024, Advance Phase LLC bought roughly 500 acres in the Wallula Gap Business Park for USD 32.5 million, with a data center campus in mind, though the end user behind that plan was not identified at the time. That earlier scheme envisioned a USD 4.8 billion campus with 16 buildings, developed in four phases of 125 acres each.

Each phase was to contain four buildings of 215,000 sq ft (19,975 sqm), adding up to more than 3.4 million sq ft (315,870 sqm) in total. The Attalia campus, by comparison, comprises three buildings and 134 acres.

The setting

The Wallula Gap Business Park is a 1,900-acre heavy industrial site sitting alongside US Highway 12 and the Union Pacific Railroad mainline, roughly ten miles (16km) from Interstate 395. Walla Walla itself lies in southeastern Washington, about a four-hour drive from Portland, Oregon, where AWS already operates an existing cloud region.
