Among the most striking details in Cortex DC's launch announcement is the timetable.
The company, a newly formed subsidiary of The Chatterjee Group (TCG), says it aims to have its first data centre operational within 18 months of breaking ground. That accelerated development approach is presented as a core part of how the venture intends to compete in India's fast-forming AI infrastructure market.
Cortex DC targets 2 GW capacity across India
The debut project is the opening move in a much larger plan: Cortex DC intends to develop 2 GW of AI-ready data centre capacity across India in total.
The announcement was made on Thursday, with the company pointing to growing demand for high-performance computing fuelled by artificial intelligence and cloud adoption as the driver behind the build-out.
A pledge on clean power
Speed is not the only differentiator the company claims. Cortex DC says it will source 51 percent of its energy from green sources, a commitment it places alongside its emphasis on speed and scale as the defining characteristics of the new platform. The company frames its build-out as prioritising sustainable power as well as capacity growth.
Positioning India for global compute workloads
Rahul Sharma, chief executive of Cortex DC, described the company's market positioning in the announcement. He said the business is building infrastructure in India to serve both global and local customers and that his aim is for the country to become a premier destination for demanding compute workloads.
The venture, according to the company, is designed to support the next phase of growth in cloud computing, AI adoption, and digital services in India. Cortex DC said it believes it is well placed to establish a significant presence in the country's emerging AI infrastructure market, citing its planned capacity, rapid development schedule, and established team.
TCG's chairman ties the venture to the group's roots
Purnendu Chatterjee, founder and chairman of The Chatterjee Group, connected the data centre platform to the investment group's broader history. He said Cortex DC extends TCG's philosophy of building knowledge-based businesses into the digital backbone of what he called the Intelligence Age.
TCG itself is a New York-headquartered private equity and industrial holding group with more than USD 4 billion in deployed capital. Its portfolio reaches across petrochemicals, life sciences, technology, financial services, and real estate.
That diversification, spanning capital-intensive industries, is the base from which the new data centre venture is being launched.
Scale meets a rising market
The arrival of a 2 GW AI-ready platform adds substantial planned capacity to India's data centre sector at a time when, per the company's announcement, demand for high-performance computing is climbing on the strength of AI and cloud adoption.
Cortex DC's stated combination of scale, accelerated timelines, and a 51 percent green energy commitment forms the basis of its ambition to become a significant player in the market, according to the company's own framing of the launch.
